COC November Post: What did you set up first and why? What were the benefits and drawbacks of the way that you set up your village?

  1. The first thing that I built in my village was a cannon. I did this because I thought I needed to protect my village. I realized that such a low level cannon would not have much of an effect on an enemy raid. But I needed to start somewhere. From there I built my resources, such as gold mines and elixir collectors along with storage units for each. I felt I should have done this first, but I think it worked itself out in time.

The benefits of my village, when I set it up, included a high production rate of resources and a good defense system. I think the resources helped me the most. They speed up the progression of my overall village by giving me a lot of gold and elixir. My defenses allowed me to protect my village but not immensely. I feel that my village was a lot weaker than stronger. In other words the weaknesses were much more prevalent than my strengths. I had, and still have a low level town hall which makes it so that I can't build a greater variety of things. My army camp is only level two, which makes it so that I can't have a huge number of troops to attack with. But all in all, I like the way my village is progressing.

I am wondering, what is the benefit to having high level walls? Aren't the people who are going to attack people with high level walls, have level according troops. I’m not sure, I will have to explore this further.

    1. It is important to have high level walls because as your opponents' troops become higher level, the walls will not be able to hold them back as long. It is important for them to hold attacking forces back so that your defenses have more time to shoot at them.

    2. Walls in my opinion do not really hold back troops very well but it does give your defenses a chance to obliterate the opponent attacking you. So yes I think upgrading your walls is definitely a great strategy.

  2. The first thing I did when I got my village was that I began to build my resources right away. I bought multiple elixir storages and elixir collectors as well. I also bought multiple gold mines and gold storages. I began to save my elixirs and gold coins. I did this because I quickly realized that the elixirs and gold coins played a key role in this game. You always have to upgrade things in your village, and that always costs a form of money. I also bought two cannons for my village.

The benefits of focusing on my money, is that I rarely don’t have enough money to upgrade my resources. Since the gold coins and elixirs are a very important while playing Clash of Clans, the way I set up my village is very beneficial. To be quite frank, I don’t really understand the game Clash of Clans that well, but I understand that defending your village is very important. I placed two cannons in my village as defense mechanisms. Since my main focus for my village was to have many resources, it wouldn’t do too well during an attack. I have also focused on creating a strong army. Having trained my troops multiple times and attacked other people’s villages has also helped me collect more gold coins and elixirs.

As I continue to play this game I hope to learn more strategies and techniques. I hope to continue to gather more elixirs and gold coins. I also want to build a wall around my village, so my village wouldn’t get destroyed if someone were to attack it. As I continue to play, the more I will learn.

    1. I did virtually the same thing. I think that your strategy will help you succeed in this game. I honestly don't understand this game much either. But the locus you used seems to me the most likely to succeed. I wonder if you will focus more on offense or defense? Good luck.

    2. This is the same basic strategy that I use. Focusing on resources and walls. It has worked well for me (I'm at 502 trophies), so keep at it.

    3. This is the same strategy I used and I thought it was smart but I quickly realized it was a big mistake. I realized that is was most important to first build up your defenses so you can successfully win an attack.

  3. The first thing I set up in my village was my barracks. Barracks are very important because they allow you to train troops for raiding. After that I leveled up my storages as fast as possible so that I could store all the loot I was getting from my raids. After that I upgraded my town hall and my collectors.

The benefits of my village are that I have pretty high level collectors, storages, and army camps. This allows me to get lots of resources very quickly. I am upgrading an elixir collector to level nine as I type, and I can house 115 troops in my army camps. The biggest drawback is that I lose a lot of trophies when I am raided. This morning when I loaded up the game I was not thrilled to see -47 trophies. For now my village is still holding up well though.

As I progress through higher and higher town hall levels, I wonder if I will be able to save up for the more expensive upgrades. There is one upgrade that I can think of that costs eight million gold. That will be quite challenging to attain. So far the experience has been great, and I hope it continues to be throughout the year.

    1. Ryan, I think it's interesting that you built your barracks first. How come you didn't build any defenses or resources first? But I guess it all came together. I like that you can house up to 115 troops. Right now I can only house ninety something. There are many different strategies one can take in this game. I think yours is pretty good. Good luck.

    2. An interesting strategy to say the least. I would not have done the barracks first, simply because losing raids due to lack of defenses would most likely take away more trophies than I would earn. But if it works for you, that's great. At least your village is holding up well.

  4. The first thing I set up in my village were my resources. I bought the max amount of elixir collectors and gold mines. I then realized that I needed more storage to hold all of my elixir and gold so I bought the max amount storage for both too. I upgraded those as quickly as I could and used up my gems in the process. I then bought and started to upgrade my cannon followed by an archer tower and some walls.

The benefit of setting up my village this way was that I always had money and could be continuously upgrading everything. Originally I was using my gems to upgrade everything faster. When you first start the game you have a shield. When my shield ran out I was attacked and didn't really like that they took some of my money. At this point I had about 20 gems left and decided that I needed another shield. When I looked I realized the importance of not spending your gems. I had heard from other people to upgrade you town hall last so I started upgrading everything and changed my main focus from my gold and elixir to my defenses.

I wonder about the importance of shields and if I would really benefit from buying myself a shield. When someone attacks me they usually don't get very much gold and elixir and I get a small shield. Also when I have a shield if I want to have a multiplayer attack and possibly earn some trophies, I would have to end my shield early which would be a waste of gems spent on a shield.

    1. The shield is usually good when you get attacked and you want to give your collectors a long period of time to collect elixirs and gold coins.

    2. Honestly I am never really worried about my shields and when they run out. Like you said already they do not get that much but you do lose trophies. Losing trophies is probably the biggest loss in a certain village.

      Delete
    3. Shields are more useful when you get to a higher town hall level because people will take a lot of loot. Another reason you may want to buy a shield is if you go on vacation and are not able to attack. This way you don't lose any of your trophies and loot. There is also an alternative to buying shields. It's called farming, farming is where you put your town hall in an unprotected spot. The enemy can then easily take out the town hall so you get a free shield. The only problem with this is that you lose some trophies every time you get attacked.

    4. Kate. I know you have been able to adapt to your own clans needs and think that you will have no trouble continuos to do so. I do not have very much advice for you, and
You have already agnowledged the pros and cons of your strategy. Good luck with your clan!

    5. I think using/buying a shield is really important for several reasons. It's a great thing to have because then you don't have to worry about being attacked and loosing resources. Personally, I think it's always better to be safe than sorry.

    6. I personally think that having good physical defenses (specifically level 2 walls) can be better and more cost effective than a shield. Any low-level raiders will be deterred by them, and it's cheaper than just buying a sheild every day or week or so.

  5. The first part of my village that I decided to focus on was the gold storage. I wanted to do this so that I could save up coins for necessary troops, other upgrades, and to move towards building my clan castle. I thought that it was more important to save up so that in the future I could build a lot of barracks and upgrade my army and be successful when I decide to attack other clans.

My village benefited from my decision because I was immediately able to upgrade my barracks and my town hall with saved up gold coins. I also bought a cannon, which covers almost all of the area of my village. I am unsure, but I believe that having defenses that can also harm opponents is more important than having defenses that only stay in the way of opposing troops. A con of my approach was that I used up much of my elixir upgrading the gold storage. It took me quite a while to earn even enough to just train my troops for one attack. Also, although my gold storage is large, it is also worse when I am raided. The army that attacked me last almost completely wiped out my gold coins, which was a great annoyance since most of my energy went towards that.

I am still unsure of the reason to upgrade the town hall. I have already upgraded mine once, and I didn't find it very useful. This is my same problem with the shields. If I spend the little gems that I have on a shield, I don't want it to have a chance of not being used. I also do not know if a shield will protect my village from an entire attack, or act as just another defense unit like a cannon or wall.

    1. Upgrading your town hall is actually a very important part of the game. You upgrade the town hall because it gives you more defenses, walls, gold and elixir collectors and troops. When you upgrade your town hall it's like a fresh start. Except this time you get more buildings and higher levels. Also the shield fully protects your base for a certain amount of time. The more expensive the shield the longer it protects.

    2. I suggest upgrading your town hall last. Upgrade everything else as much as you can. As for the shields, I wouldn't waste your gems because when you have a shield you can not attack and earn trophies. Instead of shields focus on your defenses.

    3. The town hall is a focus for me at times, simply for the increased wall capacity.

    4. Natalie, I agree with Ethan. Upgrading the town hall is key to being successful in the game. It allows you to get more resources and defenses. As for your question, the shield will keep you from being attacked while a wall will only help defend your village during an attack. The shield is very useful. I use it and I think it helps quite a bit. Good luck with the game.

    5. I agree with Kate, I think that your defenses should be a main focus of your village. When you upgrade the town hall it gives you the ability to upgrade many things in your village. When you can upgrade things throughout your village, it makes your village stronger and better.

  6. The first thing I did when I started the game was build up my resources. I thought this was important because if I had a lot of elixir and gold, I would be able to buy other things like barracks and defenses. My main goal was to rebuild my clan castle so I began to save money. I quickly realized that I would need to upgrade my storage. After I realized this I bought the max amount of storage and began to upgrade them.

One of the benefits I received from saving up elixir and coins was that I always had the money to buy other necessary things for my village. I was also able to upgrade objects that I already had like my town hall and the few defenses I had. Even though I was happy with my decision to first build up my elixir and coins, I quickly found out that was a fatal mistake. I was attacked and lost some of my money and trophies. I learned that it is very important to first build defenses and upgrade them so you can fight off enemies. If you don't have strong defenses you have more of a chance of getting attacked and sadly I had to learn that the hard way.

As I progress through this game I hope I become wiser to what is necessary and unnecessary in my village. I have already upgraded certain things which I was told was important like my town hall and clan castle. I also now have a strong support system so I can now successfully ward off unwanted visitors. I have also figured out that buying decorations is unimportant since they don't serve a purpose. So far I have had an amazing time playing and I hope I can easily advance through this game and have a high level village when the end of the year comes around.

    1. HOW DARE YOU CLAIM THAT DECORATIONS ARE UNIMPORTANT! Why, if you were invading a barely fortified base, that was a garunteed win for you, and you saw it had pretty flower bushes and torches scattered about, would you attack? OF COURSE YOU WOULDN'T! You would stop and settle your differences through irritatingly ineffectual diplomacy! Everyone knows that flowers are way too overpowered....*coughsarcasmcough*

    2. I agree that it is a bad idea to waste money on useless decorations. I also experienced a clan targeting my elixir and gold and causing me to lose my trophies.

  7. When I began playing, I focused on the resources. Resources are the number one requirement to get far, faster, in Clash of Clans. Without resources, you are much more vulnerable to attack (and loss), because you won't be able to afford defenses. In my case, I focused on three elixir pumps, and three gold mines. I a dealing with 2 of each kinds of storages. Now that my resources are at a sufficient level, I have been focusing on walls. Walls keep pesky invaders from either A) Looting you or B) Destroying your town hall.

When I first heard the question, I had thought directly to resources, but then I realized that I am constantly changing on my focus, depending on how raids are going for me. If I win often, I focus on resources. If I haven't won, I'll be sure to focus on my defenses/walls. My strategy is more of an adaptation than a brute and oppressive wall. Metaphorically, I'm grass that bends with the wind, but others are trees, pushing against the wind threatening to fall.

I'm wondering which is more important as of my current status of an even win/loss ratio: Upgrade the rest of my walls, buy a spell factory, or focus on increasing my trophies?

    1. I think that you should focus on increasing your trophies. Even though getting a spell factory should be a priority too. I tend to upgrade the walls as I go.

      Delete
    2. I would go with a spell factory. Althogh you only get 1 lightning spell, it can still be effective against clan castle troops. Any extra offensive powers could be the difference between winning an losing.

  8. When I first started my clan my first move was to build up my defenses without expending my resources. I did this because I was pretty sure that oh as a shield for the first few days after I created my clan. I wanted to be prepared for attacks when that period of time was over.

I found that saving my resources meant that my progress was very slow. I have yet to fully discover if my strategy will pay off in the long run.

I'm curious how some players are able to build defenses and upgrade their buildings as well as keeping their money, elixir, and jewels. I know some people are able to do this. I think the most logical solution to this dilemma is that they pay real money in order to keep their resources and still be able to upgrade.

  9. For my village, I set up my defense items first because I want my village to be protected. I was going to set my resources first but then I realized how many people wanted to attack my village and so I decided it was best if I set up my ‘cannons’ and other things. And occasionally I get a shield so I guess that's an advantage because it prevents other clans from attacking my clan.

One of the benefits of setting up my village that way was so I could automatically have protections. I don't want to save on resources and not have any defenses because if that's the case, my clan would get attacked often. Also, the more defense stuff I get, the less my clan would be attacked. But I can't control exactly when I'm going to be attacked so upgrading my cannons and other items would help me be prepared if it does happen.

The downside of setting up my clan that way is that since I spent all my money and coins of defense items, I don't have enough to upgrade my gold storage or anything often. And sometimes when I earn coins, apparently the storage has reached its ‘maximum’ and I don't have enough money to upgrade. I think from now on, I might balance my money out.

    1. It's important to save your money during this game. The gold coins help you upgrade things making you game stronger and better.

    2. I like your idea of adding defense units early on in your village. I saved up on my coins to build my clan castle, but I still want mine to be able to defend itself and not lose trophies.

  10. I found that the easiest way for me to reset my Clash of Clans account was to take over my sister's unused town hall 2 design over game center. Because of my sister's terrible planning skills, I began the game with literally no money or elixir, and only a single archer tower for defense. Because I had no money, I first upgraded my gold mine and storage, as well as my elixir storage. Being at town hall 2 with nothing else upgraded is more of a disadvantage than an advantage, because I was more likely to get raided. Also I had no money for defenses like cannons or walls.
Because of my bad condition, I had to resort to putting my gold and elixir storage inside walls, while leaving my town hall unprotected. I didn't need trophies at the time, so that worked out pretty well.
I still wonder if it's worth it to waste gems to get myself more gold and elixir. Starting in a financial crisis is hard...

    1. That's great way to tackle a financial crisis. Farming is a strategy used by higher level players to gain resources in short amounts of time. At lower levels farming is hard because there is a lack of walls. I imagine that some of your defensive buildings were left unportected. Was this strategy effective for you? Did you lose any loot?

  12. When I started playing, I immediately started working on upgrading resource storages. By upgrading storages, I was hoping that it would allow me to be a clan leader. I was attacking players with the highest loot available so I could gain more resources. I neglected any upgrades on my defenses to have as much loot as possible; which, might have affected my village negatively, in some ways. I had to make choices, and ended up upgrading some barracks. At first, I thought it was a waste of money, but then it started to benefit me later on. Towards the completion of my goal, I was becoming impatient with every minute, so I decided to spend gems to speed up build times and acquire loot for my clan castle.

The previous decisions I had made, greatly impacted my village in both positive and negative ways. By upgrading all my storages, I would be able to upgrade any building without having to worry about the resource cap. I feel like this decision got me the privilege of clan leadership, but in exchange, I didn't upgrade many defensive buildings to protect my own village. I also spent most of my gems, which could've been used for builder huts. My village is definitely weaker than most, but I think I can get stronger by playing often.

Now the I am a clan leader, I have many hopes for my clan and any future members. I will try my best to help out the members, and to educate them on different aspects of the game. Members will actively participate on decisions and help run the clan. Once the clan fills up, I will have competitions within my own clan to see who can work the hardest. The winners will receive co and eldership, since they have proven their dedication to the clan. I feel like encouraging members to do their best and to work as a team will drive this clan to victory.

  13. When I started building my clan I tried to get as many resources as I could. I had to get a lot of money and elixir so that I could buy walls and protect my village and for me it was hard to not protect my village while building a steady "income". I still try to get more resources than to defend myself because at the beginning trophies did not matter as much. Now I will have to start gaining trophies to become better at the game.
